The BDA General and Education Trust Fund (GET) is once again offering funding for two places on the innovative M-Level AHP Professional Leadership Development Programmes run through both the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) and the University of Hertfordshire.
This is an excellent opportunity for a Dietitian who has had some management or team leader responsibility and wishes to develop their leadership skills to move towards a more senior position within the NHS, or similar organisation.
Aims of the Programme
The Leadership Development Programme is tailored specifically for Allied Health Professionals (AHPs). Running since 2017, former participants surveyed noted skill development, increased knowledge and confidence, networking opportunities and improved career prospects.
The GET is providing funding for two placesin 2022/23, in order to provide opportunities to further develop future leaders within the dietetic profession. This fits in with our commitment to supporting professional leadership for dietitians and promoting AHP Directors, to maximise the contribution of dietitians and other allied health professions to improving health outcomes.
Course structure
The programme is run over two semesters, delivered using a variety of stimulating, engaging and interactive learning methods to help develop your leadership skills.
The programme can be taken at either The University of Hertfordshire (UoH) and The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan).
It is run as an M-level/level 7 accredited module (or level 11 in the Scottish Credit & Qualifications Framework) worth 30 credits at UoH and 20 credits at UCLan.
The two-semester module consists of:
- 300 hours of learning
- Personality profiling
- Face to face workshops
- Group discussions
- Action learning sets
- Online learning

Eligibility
In order to apply, candidates must be:
- A dietitian registered with the HCPC
- A current BDA member
Candidates must also:
- Have had some experience of management or team leader responsibility
- Be aspiring to a leadership position to lead advancement in the science and practice of dietetics

Process
The GET Trustees will appoint a review panel, who will meet in July to decide upon the two successful candidates. Applications will be assessed on the ability of the candidate to provide leadership to dietitians and other AHPs to enable them to lead advancement in the science and practice of dietetics.
The reviewers’ views are confidential, as is the whole process. The decision on the successful applicants will be a decision for the Trustees alone.
The timing of the process is to enable successful applicants to attend the courses due to start in the Autumn of 2022 at both Universities.
All recipients of GET funding are expected to report back to the Trustees on how the grant has been used to advance dietetics. Applicants will be asked to confirm that, if successful, they will complete questionnaires over the next two years and agree to feedback on the benefit of the programme to others.
