A night at the movies! Attendees were updated on the most recent PENG guidelines with detailed discussions on how to implement the new nutritonal requirements in clinical practice. Dr Liz Weekes kindly shared her presentation with us and Bruno Mafrici offered his support when we asked specific questions about the requirements and the evidence base. Attendees participated in case studies and shared their experiences of using nutritional requirements in practice. Eleanor Johnstone from the British Dietetic Association provided a very informative insight into what PEN can offer- an amazing resource to allow dietitians to access the most up-to-date evidence base at their fingertips. The CPD and networking event #SeeDiabetesDifferently in June 2019 promoted #Diabetes AwarenessWeek through eye-opening anecdotes from people with diabetes, insightful information from the Director of Diabetes UK and evidence-based presentations from Aisling Pigott-Jones RD, Cath Washbrook RD and Elaine Hibbert-Jones RD who all contribute to different diabetes specialities.

Let’s Get Cooking! A festive gluten-free experience included demonstrations from Annabelle O’Toole and Suzanne Mitchell, updates from Registered Dietitians about gluten free prescriptions and insights into various projects run across Wales from Coeliac UK’s lead in Wales. Tom Melbury from the BDA shared information about the toolkit required for environmentally sustainable diets and Kath Singleton RD also shared her experience of developing a new dietetic service for adult inherited metabolic disorders in Wales.

BDA South Wales Branch Summer CPD Event 2018

7 June 2018, 5.30pm - 8pm

Court Coleman Hotel, Bridgend 

The re-launch of the branch had 55 attendees. The night involved a host of dietitians from the acute, community and freelance settings talk about #DietitiansDoPrevention. Jamie Cull RD spoke about prehabilitation and optimisation for lung cancer patients. Emma Homes RD discussed the award winning SHEP (School Holiday Enrichment Programme being conducted by Public Health. Chris Cashin RD, SENR, DProf presented on the prevention of dehydration and fatigue in the wales Bowls squad as they prepared to compete at the Gold Coast.

South Wales Branch Re-launched

Cardiff Metropolitan University

The BDA, with the help of Cardiff Metropolitan University, held a free event on Tuesday 22nd November. The event was an opportunity to hear about the latest developments both in dietetics and at your professional body from Caroline Bovey, Chair of BDA Wales Board.

Attendees also learnt about why and how all dietitians should be influencing from the BDA Head of External Affairs, Jo Instone. Judy Lawrence, BDA Research Officer gave an overview of the research and audit opportunities for dietitians and students. We also had lots of ideas from members on the future direction of the Branch. Laura King, BDA Membership Officer, gave an overview of the benefits of getting involved in the Branch committee.  It was a great evening and we are hoping that with the number of new volunteers that came forward, the next Branch event will be very soon!
